Essay
To quote Oprah Winfrey, "Leadership is about empathy. It is about having the ability to relate to and connect with people for the purpose of inspiring and empowering their lives." This past year, the team went through extenuating circumstances which tested the leadership line indefinitely. I am capable of being Colonel because I’m not afraid to stand alone, I’m open to listening to others ideas, and I will bring a sense of unity to our team.
I am capable of being Colonel because I am not scared to have my own opinion. What I’ve learned from having the opportunity of being Junior Captain last year is that leaders have to stay strong and stand alone which can be hard to do. It’s especially difficult if you are afraid to upset someone or if you’re afraid of using your voice. As I learned from watching the senior officers lead, I as well spoke up when I saw something that needed to be cleaned in a dance while also taking the initiative to do things for the benefit of the team. These actions display how I am suitable for Colonel because I can lead with the best intentions for the team while speaking up when needed.
I am qualified to be Colonel because I’m open to listening and including others' ideas. Having six people on the officer line this year made it hard to incorporate everyones thoughts when we had to make decisions. For example, when we were picking our costumes the other officers and I gave our own opinions on how we felt about it and before solidifying, we made sure everyone approved of them. This demonstrates how I am fitted to be Colonel because I’m able to work with others to find common ground while taking everyones ideas into account.
I have what it takes to be Colonel because I will help bring a sense of unity to the new team. Last year's team, COVID interfered with the new team practices as well as the summer camps where we usually form a tighter knitted bond and I know personally it was hard at first to make close relationships with newcomers. With that being said, I know it can be scary making the team and trying to make friends. Knowing that’s how I felt as a newbie on the team, I built relationships in and out of dance throughout the year to make them feel welcomed. I did this by texting them, talking to them before or after practice, and by helping them with skills occasionally. This demonstrates how I will bring unity because I want the team to feel like a family so we can grow and become even better together.
All in all, I am capable of being Colonel because I’m not afraid to stand alone, I’m open to listening to others ideas, and I will bring a sense of unity to our team. Just like in Highschool Musical, when we are all in it together anything is possible.
